Accessibility eLearning Case Study: Inclusive Communities Training

Project Overview

Commissioned by Inclusion NB and Inclusive Communities Institute, our team designed and developed a suite of online courses, tailored from the ground up for an asynchronous learning environment.

These courses span four distinct streams, each catering to a specific group of learners. The project's primary objective is to equip learners with the confidence and competencies to provide inclusive services, expanding opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Our commitment to accessibility is ingrained in every aspect of our eLearning solutions. We prioritize creating an inclusive environment that caters to diverse learning needs by following industry standards for accessibility.

The launch of the initial 10 courses, exclusively designed and developed by KnowledgeNow, has significantly impacted disability training and support in New Brunswick. The project has led to increased awareness and support for people with disabilities, intensified efforts for advocacy of inclusion, and fostered the adoption of sustainable practices across various organizations.

Client Feedback

  • Most of our training had little to no accessibility standards/features. We did not know the level of accessibility options/best practices, etc until we met with the KnowledgeNow team.

  • Knowledge Now was very open to working with our self-advocates to ensure the accessibility and inclusion needs were being met. They took the time to meet and thoroughly discuss sensitive topics on inclusion, autism and mental health. This led to accessibility features used in our courses and animated videos.

  • The knowledge and awareness that KnowledgeNow had was superior to other vendors we had approached. Many vendors did not even bring up accessibility in their features/offerings. Others also had a cookie-cutter approach – KnowledgeNow gave us the option of creating our own unique guiding principles for our work with a heavy focus on inclusion and accessibility.

    • Voice over options within courses

    • Option to download transcripts

  • Course feedback has been very positive and included feedback on ease of use, visuals and alt text descriptions, the options for voiceover and the ability to download different resources or transcripts.

    • 45 staff members have completed our trainings.

    • Our staff members that have completed trainings provide support for 1000 individuals/families

    • Easy to use and understand

    • Engaging

    • Learner Quotes:

“I’ve taken a lot of online training over the years, Inclusion 101 was one of the best courses I have taken. It was engaging and easy to follow and the information was extremely relevant and helpful to my family.” – New Brunswick Parent of a child with a disability

“The entire focus of this training was useful. The module was written in such a respectful way; it would be difficult to pick one aspect over another. It was evident that there was thoughtful research and care into the information provided. I felt that I was gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges that persons with Autism Spectrum Condition face in navigating the world and the particular barriers they face obtaining supports for their mental health. That was important to learn.”  ~ New Brunswick High School Guidance Counsellor
